4 Electronic Design Requirements Of The System-Integrated Soldier

Perhaps most famously portrayed in Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers (1959), the idea of the “future soldier” has been around for decades. As rehashed in countless science fiction films and video games, the stereotypical future soldier is equipped with a protective exoskeleton, enhanced sensory equipment, seamless communication systems, and advanced weaponry. While the concept once seemed implausible, there are many real-world projects under way focused on realizing those seemingly fictitious warfighter capabilities — by integrating a plethora of diverse electronic subsystems into a cohesively operational suit.

  • Passive Electro-Optical Counter-Countermeasures (EOCCM)

As laser countermeasures proliferate around the world, infantry, aircrews, and electro-optic sensors are at risk of being engaged with little to no warning. A laser countermeasure can adversely affect targeting and navigation functions by jamming or 'spoofing' the sensor through laser illumination or by damaging the sensor through more intense laser illumination. The laser can also be used to detect and track an otherwise covert electro-optic target by sensing retro-reflections off the target’s optics. This article provides a background on traditional protection technologies and explains how electro-optic counter-countermeasures (EOCCMs) can help mitigate the damage that can be inflicted on optical and electro-optical sights. By Ariela Donval and Moshe Oron, KiloLambda Technologies, Ltd.

  • Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) Imaging For Hyperspectral And Surveillance Systems

Imaging in the short wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength band (0.9um to 2.5um) has generated much attention in recent years with new applications and mission development. Advancements in SWIR sensor and infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) technologies have been the primary drivers to growing interest in areas such as conventional surveillance imaging and other hyperspectral imaging applications. This article touches on two key applications for SWIR detection.

  • Ensquared and Encircled Energy Testing Attains ‘Automated’ Status

The ensquared and encircled energy (EE) test method is a quantification of the fraction of optical energy present in the aperture of an optics system. This white paper outlines how this method can provide greater accuracy, application flexibility, and even lower overall costs when compared to interferometry and MTF test instruments.

  • The Fundamentals Of AOTF-Based Spectral Imaging And Polarimetry

Many hyperspectral imaging (HSi) systems use a diffraction grating to split up a line of an image into strips with different wavelengths and so build up a 3D image cube. While this push-broom process works well for capturing hyperspectral images where there is a built-in, one-dimensional relative movement between the camera and the object, there are many situations where band sequential imagers are more effective. This article explores the basics of acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) and polarimetric technology and discusses the advantages of using those approaches for hyperspectral imaging. By Alexandre Y. Fong and Jon Ward, Gooch & Housego
