Olsen's Space Expedition Planned for April 2005
Princeton, NJ -- SUI, Part Of Goodrich Corporation is pleased to announce its CEO, Greg Olsen, Ph.D., will be Space Adventures' next private space explorer to travel to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Dr. Olsen will begin cosmonaut training next month at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. The launch date for his flight is scheduled for April 2005.
Dr. Olsen founded SUI, the leading provider of innovative short wave infrared imaging products, in 1992. Under his leadership, SUI has led the way in developing infrared imaging technology. Dr. Olsen hopes to access equipment on the International Space Station to conduct various science and research projects.
"Greg is one of the premier scientists in his field. This mission validates his commitment to his work and desire to make a difference in private space exploration," said Marshall Cohen, president, SUI. "We are excited for Dr. Olsen and thrilled about his mission objectives," he added.
Dr. Olsen's mission continues Space Adventures ongoing effort of opening the space frontier to more than just career astronauts and cosmonauts. Dr. Olsen hopes his trip will inspire more young people to study science and technology.
"I was hooked on space since I was a child and decided then that space and technology were important for our future" said Dr. Olsen, CEO, SUI. "My hope is that more young people will realize this too and desire to make a difference for humanity's future."
Dr. Olsen has a strong track record of success. During his tenure as CEO, SUI has been a leading provider of innovative short wave infrared imaging products based on indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) technology. Our scientists and engineers ensure that we bring the customer's vision to life, on time and within budget.
Dr. Olsen was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1945, and raised in a working class family. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a B.S. in electrical engineering and physics and a Masters degree in Physics. He then earned a Ph.D. in Materials Science from The University of Virginia. From 1972 to 1983, he worked at RCA Laboratories, now known as the Sarnoff Corporation. In 1984, Dr. Olsen started his first company, Epitaxx and later sold it for $12 million. Dr. Olsen later sold SUI for 700 million (USD). In 2002, Olsen orchestrated a management buy-back of the company.
