The design of a low noise, high sensitivity Joulemeter amplifier requires an understanding of the noise sources and their behavior. Unlike a radiometric application that can be modulated and have its output measured by a lock in amplifier in a very low bandwidth to control noise, with a Joulemeter the broadband response must be considered. The basic noise sources of the circuit in figure 1 are the feedback resistor, the amplifiers input noise current, and the amplifiers input noise voltage. Not shown in the circuit is the loss tangent noise of the Pyroelectric detector. This noise source can be ignored due to its low level.
