Introduction

There are several considerations when selecting the right camera for your application. The approach you take will vary based upon your priorities, for example you may already have a limited budget which will instantly rule out the high end systems, alternatively the features you are trying to resolve may demand a certain resolution which is only achievable with your desired frame rate by using the highest performance system. The following pages address these issues and also put these considerations in some kind of order.

Parameters you should consider:

  • Frame Rate
  • Image Resolution
  • Exposure Time (Shutter speed)
  • Sensitivity
  • Bit depth (dynamic range)
  • Colour or Monochrome
  • Camera interface
  • Physical size

Application issues you need to address

  • Sufficient time resolution – being able to see the event happen
  • Motion blur – being able to freeze the event
  • Light levels – having the right illumination source and camera sensitivity
  • Location – portability, communication cable lengths
  • Lens type – image coverage of sensor
  • Budget – Compromise but at what cost?
