Tutorial: Essentials To Consider Before Purchasing A High-Speed Imaging System

By ANDREW BRIDGES

From industrial fault-finding and process control, to broadcast and sports imaging and analysis, to missile launches and life sciences, high-speed imaging is changing the way we view the world. With the technological advances in high-speed digital video over the past 8 to 10 years, particularly in CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor technology, slow motion cameras are now easier and more intuitive to use. The new high-speed camera systems available offer extraordinary speed, resolution, and sensitivity for studying ultra-fast phenomena and quickly detecting problems in fast-moving processes.

Over the past several decades, the applications for high-speed imaging have dramatically increased for a broad range of tasks, from automotive crash testing to animal behavior, biomedical, motion analysis, film and TV production, and product component performance. These growing markets require imaging systems that allow the user to immediately view a process in slow motion in order to see events that happen too fast for the human eye to perceive or understand.
